About the ASNT Level II Certification in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT):
ASNT Level II is an internationally recognized professional qualification issued under guidelines of the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT). ASNT Level II is a working professional certification, widely accepted in oil & gas, power plants, fabrication, aerospace, shipbuilding, and infrastructure projects.
It certifies that a technician can:
- Perform NDT inspections independently
- Set up equipment and calibrate instruments
- Interpret and evaluate test results
- Prepare inspection reports
- Guide Level I technicians
Common NDT Methods Offered at Level II
Candidates usually certify in one or more of the following methods:
- Ultrasonic Testing (UT) – internal defect detection using sound waves
- Radiographic Testing (RT) – X-ray / Gamma ray inspection
- Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) – surface/sub-surface flaws in ferromagnetic materials
- Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT) – surface crack detection
- Visual Testing (VT) – visual inspection to standards
Eligibility
For Diploma / B.Tech / B.E candidates:
- Engineering background (Mechanical / Automobile / Metallurgy preferred)
- Minimum 40–80 hours classroom training per method
- Required on-job experience (OJT) before final certification
For ITI / Experienced Technicians:
- Relevant technical trade
- Field experience in fabrication / welding / inspection helps a lot
Examination Structure
Each method normally includes:
- General Exam – basic NDT theory
- Specific Exam – codes, standards & procedures
- Practical Exam – hands-on testing & interpretation
- Pass mark is usually around 70–80% per section (depends on scheme/provider).
